Snicker and Specs walked in awkward silence as Dutchy rambled on about the differences between a cat and a stick. Snicker tried hard not to look either of them in the eye, she was still nervous around everyone. "So, Snicker is it?" Dutchy asked with a goofy grin on his face. "Excuse me?" she whimpered. "Ya name, it's Snika... Right?" "Yeah..." she said softly rubbing her sore arm. He laughed, "Where didja get that name?" She giggled a little. "I see. Well if youse have any questions just ask me or one of da otha boys." "Thanks, uh..." she struggled to remember the chippy blonde boys name. "Dutchy." he said with a prideful grin. "Dutchy... How did you get that name?" "It was a misunderstanding. You know. . . Blue eyes blonde hair... Dutch., dutchy?" he tried to explain. Snicker raised an eyebrow in confusion. "Someone asked if he was Dutch, he isn't by the way, and he thought Dutchy would be a clever nickname." Specs grumbled sticking a hand in his pocket. "He can be a smart mouth sometimes, ya see." Dutchy whispered to Snicker. She nodded and giggled. "...Dutch, wha'd ya tell her?" "...Nothin..." Dutchy said innocently glancing around the street. "Not nothin, whad you say?" "..." "WHAT DID YOU SAY!!!" Specs yelled causing Dutchy to run off behind a building, screaming like a little school girl as Specs charged after him. Snicker took a moment to process the situation. Then burst into tear-gerking laughter. --- "Naw, when you yell da headline hold up da paper like dis." Blink coached slipping around behind Birdy, holding her arm up for her. She blushed and tried to bury her face into her arm. Snoddy rolled his eyes. "You can just teach from example Blink." He grinned and said, "I like ta teach me pupils by lettin them esperience tings demselves." "Very intelligent commin' from you." Snoddy mumbled.

Birdy walked along the streets with Snoddy and Blink at her side. Her arms were still a little stiff and weak, and she didn't want to yell very loud. "I can't yell those sorts of things in front of everyone! They're ridiculous and frightening!" Birdy retorted when Blink and Snoddy tried to convince her to shout. "Dat's da point, Birds! Den people will come runnin' from everyweah! Dat's how you sell da papes!" Blink said in exasperation, slinging his arm around her shoulder and sweeping his arm to indicate all the people. Birdy gently shrugged his arm away, and sighed in resignation. "All right, I'll try." Snoddy and Blink cried "YES!" in unison and pumped their arms. Birdy stepped to the edge of the street, cleared her throat, and yelled at the top of her lungs. "POLICE HORSES SLAUGHTERED! KILLER STILL ON DA PROWL!" Birdy's arm was extended as high as possible, and she was waving the paper as if she was having a seizure. Within seconds, four people rushed over to her, shoved pennies into her free hand, and hurried away. Birdy turned to her companions, and exhaled heavily. "Is that how you do it?" she asked quietly. "Oh, yeah," Snoddy replied with an enthusiastic nod. "You bet it is!" Blink cried. He moved in to hug her, but Birdy just backed away with her arms out. "Thank you very much," she said with a grin.

Echo yelled out a headline and accepted more pennies.
"Are youse sure you haven't done dis befoah?" Jack asked her with raised eyebrows.
"Yeah, youse a born natural!" Pie eater exclaimed.
"Bein' loud is just one of da things i'm good at!" Echo told them with a grin.
"That doesn't seem to be one of ya friends forte's though. What's wid dat boy uh...Switch... right? He hardly even mumbles!" Jack asked.
"Well, you really just have to get to know him first. He kinda had a bad experience when he was little so he don't trust too many people. He'll have to get used to the whole situation and the people first, then he'll just be a chatter box! I mean, alot 'a times if we're alone he can talk more than I do! And I just go on and on and on, so dat's just crazy! right?! So yeah, don't worry too much 'bout him, Switch'll come 'round eventually." Echo told them in one large breath. Jack looked to Pie Eater then back and the girl.
"Yeah, dat's pretty crazy kid." Jack laughed and smushed down the top of her hat. Echo smiled up at him then sold yet another paper.

--After pape-a-sellin' and ONTO TIBBY'S!!!!-- Snicker slid into the booth by the window, followed by Echo, Birdy, and then Squeakers. "How'd ya do, goils?" Echo asked flipping a quarter she'd earned. "Meh." The three replied in unison. "Hey Birdy, I saw you and Blink when I was on my way over here." Squeakers grinned elbowing Birdy in the gut.

Birdy snapped her head around toward Squeakers, an indignant look on her face. "What on earth are you implying?" she demanded. "Well....," Squeakers drawled with a wink. Birdy gasped. "Why would you even think that? He certainly has no respect for personal space, or for a woman's dignity! I would never take a liking to him!" she snapped. Her cheeks were flushed in what seemed like anger, but a tiny look of guilt passed across her pale features. The three other girls gave each other knowing looks and returned to their food, leaving Birdy to fume. After the quartet had finished their meal, Mr. Tibby came to give them the check. "Here you go, ladies," he said politely. "Thank you," Birdy replied automatically. The man's eyes focused on her. "I...I think I've seen you before, young lady." "N-no. You haven't, because I've certainly never seen you," Birdy said in exasperation. She knew he must have seen her at one of her father's public addresses. Birdy was desperate to get out of there. "Er, I have to use the facilities. Here's my part," she said hurriedly, placing a dime on the table. With that, she rushed off to the back of the restaurant to the bathrooms, the suspicious eyes of Tibby following her.

The other girls flipped their money down on the table and quickly shot away from Mr.Tibby.
"Birds, you can come out now." Echo said while rapping on the bathroom door. They all waited there a momet, then were met with a flash of blonde hair and feet stomping on the floor.
"Birdy. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO DIE." Squeakers said the the now breathless girl outside of Tibby's. Squeakers chuckled a bit then patted Birdy on the back.
"Yeah, it was close, but not that close." Echo told her, glancing back into the resturant.
"ok, you're right, you're right. Why don't we go back to the lodging house and rest." Birdy huffed, still catching her breath.
"You mean, go back to the distribution center and sit down, right? Birds, we still got the evenin' edition tah do, and Jack told me that we should meet him there after lunch." Echo told her very matter of factly.
"Noooo!" Birdy groaned and threw her head in her hands. Snicker pratically colapsed on the ground. But Squeakers merely squealed "Skittery!"

((should the strike happen after we join the newsies or before?)) Birdy's eyelids were like lead, and her muscles were aching. She had been running around the city the entire morning! Why should she have to do it again? But, after all, Birdy certainly wasn't used to hard activity. She used to spend practically all day sitting down. When they finally reached the distribution center, Birdy was walking with a very uncharacteristic slouch. Echo and Sqeuakers, who had never been as pampered and unworked as Snicker and Birdy, were chipper and energetic. "C'mon, goils! We'se neveh gonna get dere in time when you're draggin' like that!" Echo scolded. "How can these boys possibly do this much work in one day?" Birdy complained. "And for so little money!" Snicker added. "Aw, youse guys are such prisses!" Echo huffed.

((Snicker couldn't care sheets 'bout teh money, honestly. And I'm trying not to make her whine so much and just be quiet when shes cranky. Also this post will probably sound like all the boys like Snicker but their just being polite to her. They'd do that for any girl.)) Snicker tried her best to ignore the aches in almost all of her bones, but it was too much for her. She whimpered softly to herself with each step. Mush observed the scene from afar and slowly approached Snicker with his hands in his pockets. He stared at the ground once he got into step with her and mumbled and mumbled something that no one seemed to quite catch. He didn't know how to talk to a lady. "What was that, Mush? You'll have to excuse me I didn't catch it." Snicker said politely to the boy. "Ahh," he mumbled, " Need a lift?" Snicker raised an eyebrow in confusion. "I beg your pardon?" "I can carry you back to da house, if ya want..." Snicker smiled sweetly but shook her head no. "I need to get used to all this walking if I want to stay here. But thank you, anyhow." Mush rubbed his head. "Yea." he mumbled and fell back a few steps from her. Echo reached out and grabbed Snicker by her locks. She shrieked in pain as Echo put her head next to her ear and whispered, "Chop, chop" while making her hands into scissors and pretending to cut Snicker's hair with them. Snicker gulped and stroked her long, wavy hair. "How much should I take off?" she asked Echo nervously. Echo put a hand on her chin and thought for a moment. "It will reach a little under your chin, is all." Snicker gasped and went paler than she already was as her head slammed into the ground. "... I'll take her..." Switchblade grumbled swinging the unconscious girl over his shoulder. As they passed Mush up, a few feet away, his face went bright red with anger. "'Sokay Mush, she just ain't comfortable wit us yet." Blink reassured his friend. "Though I don't see why." he said to himself with a prideful grin. "Dats not why I'm mad!" Mush excalimed, "I just figured out who broke my old walkin' stick!" Mush pointed an accusing finger at Dutchy, who was at the moment, clinging to a tree and saying something to it aloud. "..."

Birdy guessed that the whole house could hear the groan that escaped Snicker when she flopped onto her creaky old cot. Echo patted the now almost sleeping Snicker on the back as she passed her.
"Don't worry, it'll get easier... maybe" She whispered menicinlgly with devious snicker. Echo was only met with a soft snoring, she chuckled a bit then continued to the top bunk above Snicker's bed. Echo heared Birdy thud onto her bunk, quickly followed by a snoring squeakers. Echo soon easily slipped into the sleep of her new life along with all the others.
