Echo stood, shivering and shoving her face as far into Switchblade's side as possible, autumn had just smacked into New York and it's residents were having trouble getting used to the new season. The 3 other girls were also huddled around Switchblade, they didn't really feel comfortable getting close with any of the other newsies for the body-heat factor and since Echo was with Switch, so were they. ---later--- The others had parted from Switchblade after getting there papers and had each gone their separate ways. Echo stood in the same position as before and with Switch's arm around her now ((she's just cold and he cares about her, don't get any ideas)) Echo was shouting and shouting without any luck, why weren't people buying? "Maybe I need to find a new sellin' spot" Echo said with a slump, disappointed. "You could go to a different borough, maybe... Brooklyn?" Switch said tentatively, not sure what her reaction would be. ((Echo lived in Brooklyn before her parents died, then went to the orphanage in Manhattan)) "uhh..." Echo gulped. She squeezed Switchblade a little tighter and took a deep breath. "You don't ha--" He started but she interrupted. "I'll do it." Echo said, almost smiling, it would be a thrill to finally confront her fear after all this time. ---later--- Echo took one last step and crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, she took in a deep breath. "I missed you" She mumbled to herself, she had always loved her home. She took another moment to look around, then set off, full speed, a glee filled squeal echoing throughout the whole city. All of her worrying about coming back were wrong, it was great!! Her fun was interrupted though, first by a tap on the shoulder and an "ahem" and then by a great shadow. She turned around to see the back of a skinny yet muscular boys head, he had sandy brown hair and stood about 7 or 8 inches taller than her, but was more than a foot shorter than Switchblade. "Who are you?" The boy said with a slight sneer in his voice. Switchblade only glared at him then shoved his extended thumb over his shoulder, telling Echo get over with him. "Echo, get over here, now." Switchblade said mono-tone, still glaring at the boy. Echo edged her way around the boy and stood next to Switch. When she looked the boy she was met with ice blue eyes and a devious smirk. Her dark brown eyes locked with his and it was like she was in a trance wow... she thought to herself. She snapped herself out of it and returned his smirk with one of her own((Echo's a bit of a flirt in her own way)), she then extended her hand to him. "Echo, Manhattan newsie. This is Switch" Echo smiled at him then gestured up to Switchblade. "Spot, leader of dah Brooklyn newsies" He said before planting a kiss on her hand. This only increased the tension between Spot and Switch, and Switch elbowed in front of Echo, un-latching their hands. "What da you want" Switch asked him menacingly. "This is my territory, I should be askin' youse da same thing" Spot shot back at him. ((the rest of it is predictable and not all that exciting so I'll just end it there. Summary of the meeting: Switchblade and Spot hate each other and basically start the fight for Echo. Echo is head over heels for Spot but won't admit it because they just met, and Spot is pretty interested in her too. TAA DAA!! ))

Snicker lie on her stomach on a dirty park bench, fingering it's metal front legs. She hadn't sold a single paper, but what did she care? She still had plenty of cash stashed in various places in her bunk room. She rolled onto her side and then sat up, pulling her legs up onto the bench so she was in a fettle position. She sighed and let her head fall back on the back of the cold bench. She gasped as her eyes met with her brother's. Racetrack chuckled. "Don't scare me like that!" She exclaimed hitting her brother on the arm. "What evah." he teased walking around the bench and sitting down next to her. He put his arm around her, which brought attention but he ignored the looks. "Sell anythin?" Snicker shook her head and handed him the stack of papers. He counted them quickly and said, "Never buy anymore dan 50 papes in da colder months. No one is evah outside." "Could've told me that sooner." Snicker grumbled collecting her papers back from her brother. "You should hide dose or else Weasel might make you eat one or two and papes don't taste too good." Snicker looked down at her pile then back at Racetrack. He nodded. "How... How would you know what they taste like?" "... When ya bored you esperiment." Snicker giggled. "I know what you mean. I once put a sweater mama bought me for Emily on Foofie. That didn't end well..." He snorted, "What is it wit you and dat stupid cat?" She crinkled her nose up and huffed, "Foofie is not stupid! Shes a pure breed Persian and shes very special to me!" "Angie, you used to kick ah across the room when you was 5." "When I was 5 I thought if I ate a fly I would grow wings. When you were 5 you considered tree bark to be a delicious snack." Race ignored her and changed the subject. "When is Echo choppin ya hair?" "Don't bring that up!" she shrieked gathering up curly locks of her hair and cuddling them under her chin. "Well you don't want anyone draggin you back home, do ya?" Snicker shook her head violently. "Then let ah cut it. Besides, ma is either offerin a lot of cash for us or shes tellin' people we fell into a lake and died." "I'm guessing we're dead." --

Echo held the Scissors, open, next to Snicker's head waiting for her to put her hands down.
"I can't cut ya hair if ya won't put ya hands down!" Echo exclaimed throwing her hands up.
"That's the point!!" Snicker screeched burying her head in her lap.
"How come you don't have to cut your hair Echo?" Snicker's muffled voice said accusingly.
"Cause those lard-brains could care less if I left, the only reason they had those posters up the day after they found I was gone was so they wouldn't get in trouble, they took them down the next day." Echo said in a sad tone, Switchblade came up to pat her on the shoulder.
"WELL... uhhh... WELL!!" Snicker yelled throwing her head up from her lap but keeping her hands clamped around her skull.
"Switch, grab her." Echo ordered him.
"AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" Snicker let out an ear-peircing shreik.
----HOURS later----
"I think it looks good short." Birdy told the whimpering girl huddled on her bunk. Birdy ran her hand over the top of Snicker's head and nodded reassuringly.
"meah..." Snicker sneered.

Tibby's- the same day Birdy held a piece of blond hair in her hand, feeling guilty. She would be looked for much more than Snicker, since she happened to be the mayor's daughter! Shouldn't her long, easily recognizable hair be cut, too? "Echo?" she said quietly, "should I cut my hair, too? I mean, much more people will be looking for me..." Just as she said this, Blink was slowly walking by. He suddenly whirled around and slammed his hands on the table. "No! You can't!" he cried. Realizing what he had just done, he withdrew from the table, looking a bit bashful, mostly because of the startled look on the girls' faces. "E-excuse me?" Birdy stammered. "Well, uh, youse got nice hair, so why cut it?" Blink explained, his cheeks a little pink. "Blink, you don't understand. People will find me much more easily if I keep it long, since I.... I'm the mayor's daughter," Birdy said calmly. Blink's jaw hung loose. "The MAYOR'S DAUGHTER??" he said loudly. Whispers broke out among the newsies, and their faces were turned eagerly toward Birdy. "Oh, uh, yes," Birdy said nervously, shifting in her seat. "Wow," Blink breathed, rubbing the back of his neck. In the booth behind her, Birdy could hear Racetrack whispering. "Do youse know how much money we could get fa ransom for dat goil? We'd be rich!" Birdy was getting extremely frightened. These boys were desperate for money! Of course they'd turn her in! She was crazy for saying anything.... "Blink, can I trust you, and all the other newsies, not to say or do anything? I don't want to go back....I had to stay at a boarding school that was terrible....please," Blink furrowed his brow, looking at her intently. Jack jumped up from his seat and began to whisper furiously into Blink's ear. They began to argue in angry whispers. Finally, they seemed to compromise. "Boids," Blink said firmly, "We, all the newsies," he swept his arm around the room, "promise not to turn you in." Birdy was shocked. From what she had been told ever since childhood, newsies were thieving street rats, but these boys were different. "Thank you so much, I'll always be grateful," she said sincerely. With that, she got up and gave Blink a short hug, and his face was bright with happiness when she withdrew.

((Now I cannot wright/draw Birdy with long hair anymore. :c Her hair was always my favorite out of the three of us.)) Snicker starred at the heap of golden locks that lay around the bunk room floor and sniffled. She ran a hand down the back of her own head. At least her hair still waved and curled like it had before, but it wasn't the same. She missed the feeling of whipping her head to the side and having her hair wrap around her pale face. She missed feeling it rub against her back that night, and that next week she missed being able to pull it up into a think ponytail. She missed her hair so much she cried. ---Tibby's 1 week later--- Snicker sat at the round wooden table with her head down as tears dropped from her cheeks and down onto her lap. "Stop fussing! It's been an entire week and it's only hair!" Echo hissed with a roll of her eyes. Snicker sniffed loudly, "How would you like it if I chopped off those stupid braids from the sides of your head?!" Echo mumbled something under her breath and took another big bite of her sandwich. She wasn't in the mood to kick Snicker's leg under the table, she was thinking too much. Thinking about that boy she'd met in Brooklyn. What was his name? Oh. Spot. She sighed and swallowed the lump of food in her mouth. Spot Conlon, leader of the brave Brooklyn newsies. "Echo!" Birdy said sharply breaking the girl from her trance. "For a moment I thought I'd lost you." Echo shook her head and shook the thoughts from her mind, taking yet another bite from her sandwich. "Aren't you going to eat, Snick?" she asked, her mouth stuffed with food. "No!" Snicker whimpered as she help back a gasp for air. "There, there." Squeakers said reassuringly as she pat the weeping girl on the back. "Even Birds is over it! C'mon Snick! Eat somethin!!" Echo cried shoving Snicker's plate into her face. Snicker sat up and tore a tiny piece of bread off of her roll, popped it into her mouth and slammed her head back onto the table. ... "Did you swallow it?" Birdy asked eagerly. A pause. "No." She mumbled. "DOESN'T COUNT!" Echo shouted shooting up from her chair and slamming a hand firmly on the table. The entire restaurant went silent as she awkwardly slid back down into her chair. She starred at her hands in her lap and fiddled with them.

"If you don't start eating and get over it, I'll be yanking on your precious head of hair!!" Echo threatened Snicker. Snicker whimpered and gulped down the bite of food and began forking more into her mouth with wide eyes. Echo smirked to herself and took a sip of water.

--After lunch-- Snicker and Echo strolled down 22nd together in silence. Snicker was thinking about a boy and to her surprise, Echo was too. This new mysterious Brooklyn boy seemed so intriguing to her. When she first looked at him, she got a funny feeling in her stomach, she felt weak. But no, she wasn't weak. And she most certainly was not going to swoon over this boy. No sir, not ECHO. She'd never let him get the best of her. No boy ever could. But those beautiful icy blue eyes made her feel light headed and that little smirk, it made her heart flutter. I could ask Snicker to go to the docks with me today... But he might scare her... Echo thought to herself. Snicker was thinking about a boy as well. She was thinking about Crutchy. ((WOAAAAH!!!! )) She thought he seemed sweet and could swear she'd seen him looking at her in the corner of her eye. She hadn't really a strong likeness for him, but appeared to for her! If he asks you somewhere, don't say no, you don't want to be nice. Just... try to make it clear you just want to be good friends, is all She thought nervously. "Hey!" Birdy exclaimed giddily as she ran in between the two. "Heya." Echo mumbled. Snicker remained in thought. Birdy quickly adapted to the mood of the afternoon and walked in step with the other girls. She had a boy to think about, so she fit right into the theme. Blink... Kid Blink. He was perfect. His charming grin, golden hair, and his deep blue eyes. Well, deep blue eye. He was so flirtatious, yet loyal. Somewhat like a dog you could say. Birdy looked up to the sky with a longing look. Are his hands as warm as his smile? She pondered with a smile. ((It's possible, but I'm not sure, that Trey's natural hair color is actually very dark. I've seen a couple pictures of him before and a while after Newsies with darker hair. But, you never know... ))

The three lovesick girls wandered randomly through Manhattan, with a few hours to kill before the evening edition. They eventually came a few blocks away from the Brooklyn Bridge, and Echo let out an especially wistful sigh. Even in her romantic trance, she noticed an especially fancy buggy roll down the street toward them. She recognized that buggy, and, to confirm her suspicions, the sour face of her old social worker appeared in the buggy. "Guys, run! We gotta get outta heah!" Echo cried, and grabbed the arms of her friends as she sprinted down the street away from her aunt's carriage. "What the...!" Birdy exclaimed. "What are you doing?!" Snicker demanded. "I'll tell ya when it's safe!" Echo replied. She ran as fast as her short legs would carry her, until she decided to duck into an alleyway. Birdy and Snicker ran in behind her. "Could you please explain that?" Birdy gasped. "Well, didja see that real fancy buggy?" "Kind of." 'Well da lady inside...dat was da social worker dat put in in da orphanage. If she saw me runnin' in da streets, she'd send me back ta dat rotten hole!" Echo explained. The girls sat in silence, except for the sound of them panting.

Snicker poked her head around the corner as the buggy passed. "I thought you said they didn't want you." She whispered. "Eh, well if they find me and take me back, she'll get more cash to take care of me. She prolly just uses all dat money for herself." Echo shrugged sliding down the dirty brick wall until her bottom hit the ground. "Thats what Jack said about the warden at the refuge." Birdy said in surprise peeking down the road. The carrige had long gone by then. "This reminds me of the time we hired that French maid, Marie. She never did her work and she always wreaked of French cheeses. It was very foul and we all hated her..." Snicker rambled to the two confused girls. "What does that have to do with anything?" Echo hissed. "Well she said it reminded her of now..." The pointless flashback had Snicker instantly thinking of home. Thinking of warmth. Thinking of safety. She was homesick.

"I can't believe that was so close... and what if that happens to me or Snicker?! it could be even worse!!" Birdy exclaimed, growng petrified. No one answered, Echo merely looked at her, and Snicker's eyes grew wide as she imagined herself back home sitting on her cushy bed, surrouned by fluffy pillows, petting Foofie...
"OW!" Snicker shrieked as she quicky put a hand to face that was now stinging like crazy.
"Echo!! You didn't have to slap the poor girl!" Birdy snapped.
"She just seemed a little out of it" Echo shrugged. Birdy checked on Snicker and shot a glare at Echo, she smiled proudly.

Snicker whimpered quietly to herself as the girls made their way back to the lodging house. Echo nodded to Kloppman as the girls all entered. He was standing behind the counter teaching Dutchy how to spell 'spool'. Dutchy seemed to be struggling with the double 'o' concept as the girls could hear Kloppman losing his patience as they walked the steps to their room. Echo opened the door quickly and ran to her bed immediately to dress for bed. Snicker and Birdy followed to their own beds and each collapsed on the floor. Squeakers was fast asleep in her bed and didn't even fidget when the three entered. As soon as they were dressed, they climbed into bed and fell asleep quickly. -- Snicker awoke to the sound of shouting from the washrooms from Echo and Birdy, fighting over a last bar of soap. She sat up in her squeaky spring mattress and rubbed her aching back. She smacked her flat pillow and rolled out of her thin, itchy sheets and slid her feet on the squeaky hardwood floors. "This place is not sustainable for human life." She mumbled to herself as she pulled a pair of trousers off the cold floor.
