Lucie laid in her bed wide awake, but kept her eyes closed.
"Goodnight childern!" She could her Madam Roseburry, the woman who ran the orphange, cheerily saying the room full of girls. dirty scoundrels She could hear the same woman mutter nastily under her breath. Lucie opened her eyes into thin slits and watched as the large woman left the room. Lucie laid there, stiff as board, for what seemed like forever, until she could a gentle overall snoring from the rest of the room. She hesitated a bit but slowly pulled the 3 thin blankets of her body and set a quivering foot onto the floor.
She menuvered almost soundlessly through the cramped, smelly, sweaty, dingy, horrible room she had had to live almost her entire life in. Lucie crepted slowly across the hall to the boys room, clenching her eyes shut as the door squeaked loudly. She whistled softly until a large shadow joined her at the door. The boys were much less suspicious and caring than the girls, and he had merely waited in a corner of the room until he had gotten the signal.
"Heya Is." Lucie greated her friend, or more like her brother. He nodded in response and began to follow her down the hall to the only window in the whole house big enough for anyone to fit through. Isidore pulled out a long rope made out of sheets he had gathered over the past few days. He tied it around a loose piece of metal on the window and threw it over the side. He then stopped Lucie from going first and swung himself over the side and gently dropped to the ground. Lucie followed him quickly but lost her balance about half down. She let out a muffled yelp, and neatly plunked into the arms of her friend.
Isidore groaned a bit, he was extremly EXTREMLY overprotective of Lucie, but Lucie loved him for it. "Watch it, you have to be more careful... Echo..." He told her with a smirk.
"We're free... Switchblade." She replied with a grin. He set her on her feet and the began to jog down the side of street, trying to stay as out of sight as possible.
--------------------
Angela paced anxiously just behind a the light of a streetlamp about a block down from where she lived. She was holding a large trunk, almost to big for her to carry. She began biting her nails nervously, and out of frustration, she kicked lightly at a large white fluff ball near her feet.
"Shoo, Foofie. Go away!" Angela hissed at her cat, trying to make her get the message that she was trying to send to herself. Angela began to quicken her pacing, she glanced back at her huge house more than often and looked both ways down the street even more.
Where could they be!! Angela thought to herself, getting more and more anxious and time passed. She started to think that maybe this Lucie girl was just some stupid hoax to trick her into trouble when... were those foot steps she heard? Yes!! She rejoiced, a goofy grin spreading across her face, she was too happy to even realize that it might not even be them coming!
But her prayers were answered! A very tiny girl and a not so tiny boy came up to her, slowing there jog to a stop. Angela knew that she would be leaving everything behind, he life would change forever... but her feeling of overwhelming joy that her life would be changing left all of her bad feelings in the dust. She dropped her trunk and threw her arms the small girl, almost giggling with glee.
"Do you think she's ready to leave yet Echo?" Switchblade said with a small grin, looking down to her.
"I don't know, are you...Snicker?" Echo asked sarcastically, turning to her. Snicker gave a nod and a smile, grabbed her trunk and the three set off once more.
-------------------------
Eliza sat in her bed, a small notebook and quill in hand. Her large window was open, she could see the end of her home-made rope blowing in the slight breeze. She let out a deep sigh, and continued the last sentance of her farewell to everyone.
Dear... everyone, I can't say exactly why quite yet, but I need to say good bye to you all. Goodbye to Clara, to John...
The list of Maids, servants, stable workers etc. went on and on. Eliza sighed once more as she read over and over what she had written to all the people that had taken care of her and loved her whole life... even to her father, she knew he wasn't entirely "here" right now... but she felt that this was something that he should know...
She sighed once more after tearing the page of her notebook and setting it on her bed. She took her notebook and put into a bag with a couple of other things that she knew she would want to keep, precious items to be precise. She went to the closet and added her favorite emerald green dress to her collection then tied the bag, snugly, closed. Eliza looked around the room, her eyes filled with sadness, but a small smile also began to form at the sides of her lips. She gave it a silent good bye as well, turned on her heel, bag in hand, and marched her self over to her window. She wrung her hands nervously, but then thought of the REAL friends she would finally have and her mind eased.
Eliza gasped a bit when she felt a tug on the rope, but when she looked down she smiled. She put bag over her shoulder and slid easily down the rope, plopping her feet down on the ground. She put her hands on her hips triumphantly, like she had just defeated a giant.
"Are you sure?" Snicker asked her, closing in on her face, eyes wide.
"Of course." Eliza said confidently, not even with a small twinge of worry at all!
"Then lets go... Birdy." Snicker said with a smile, ushering the group out of Birdy's back yard and onto the street again.
-----------------
Anna was litterally jumping with excitment, She couldn't wait to get away from everthing she once had. She was thrilled at even the thought of starting a new life. She put her medium sized trunk on the ground and danced around it, arms waving in the air, a tune came to mind she began to hum loudly, not caring who heard. Her face was completly a smile, ear to ear, chin to forehead, there was no way of containing her pure joy!
There was a soft knock on the main door of her house, Anna sprinted to it and nearly smacked into the back of the door. She swung the door open in a rush of glee. She had told them just to come to the front door, who cared what her stupid father thought about anything, she was gone now and there was NOTHING he could ever do about it!
"Toodle-loo moron!" escaped from Anna's lips and she was closing the door a cheerful wave in her hand. She began to jump up and down once more glad that she was finally out of her hell hole.
"calm down!!" Birdy exclaimed trying to hold down the much too excited girl. Echo wrapped an around Anna's shoulder, then her waist.
"I think we'll all enjoy what's to come... Squeakers"

Foofie rubbed against Angela's leg, pushing hard and purring loudly and happily.
"Uhh..." Switchblade muttered staring to the cat.
"Foofie is going home, she isn't even supposed to go outside!" Snicker snapped at the cat picking her up and stroking her thick white fur. Foofie looked up at her and blinked her big green eyes slowly. "Shoo cat!" She squealed tossing the cat into the air. The cat turned and hissed at her, then turned around and ran off into the direction of the house.
"Lets go, go, go people!" Echo said excitedly as the group started off on thier long walk to Manhattan.

"Um....Echo?" Birdy asked in a nervous tone. "Yeah?" Echo replied. "Exactly where in Manhattan is the lodging house?" "It's on da West Side." Birdy's steps flagged. Being raised around people who spoke of the West Side as if it were a living trashcan, she felt terrified. A look of uneasiness passed over Snicker's face, too. Echo noticed the hesitation in her friends. "C'mon, youse guys! Whatcha afraid of?" Echo demanded. "But...it's....the WEST SIDE! We're going to get murdered!" Birdy cried. Switchblade turned and loomed over Birdy. "Suck....it....up." Birdy was literally quaking in fear, but refused to cry. She breathed deeply, and a look of assurance replaced her fear. "Alright. Let's continue." Echo smiled in triumph. After walking for what seemed like an entire day, Echo pointed ahead of them toward a sign. "There it is," she said breathlessly. After a split second pause, she broke out in a wild run, accompanied with whoops of total joy. The other girls ran to keep up with her, yelling along. Switchblade simply walked, his bitter frown replaced by the smallest of smiles.

Snicker stayed back for a moment as a feeling of de ja vu passed over her. She knew she'd seen this place before. She swore it. She shook her head and skipped gleefully in the entrance along with the others. They all gathered around a counter in the lobby of the house as an old man looked up from a stack of paper work sitting on the desk. "C-c-can I he-help you?" He stuttered. "Yeah we're lookin for a place to stay." Echo said leaning on the counter. "We don't allow girls here." The old man said placing a quivering hand on the counter top. He looked back at Switchblade who shot him a sharp, deathly glare. Mr. Kloppman shivered. "But I could make an acceptance!" He exclaimed nervously. Switchblade shrugged. The old man bent down and grabbed something out of a cupboard under the counter. He set down a clipboard and pen on the top with a paper covered in names and numbers. "Put your names here and your ages here. How much your rent will be will vary depending on your age." he mumbled pointing a shaking finger at all of the sections on the paper. The group nodded as Echo snatched up the pen and scribbled her name onto the paper: Echo Quinlan "Echo?" Eliza questioned. "Yeah, most of these guys have nicknames, ya know? Think Echo suits me well, don't cha?" Lucie said with a prideful grin. Angela snickered, "Well you sure are awful loud!" Echo glared at her and wrote on the paper 'Snicker' for Angela. Angela starred at the paper in complete and utter terror. Echo smirked as 'Snicker' stood still in shock. After a moment, Snicker crinkled up her face and mumbled something under her breath as she shoved the clip-board into Eliza. "I don't know what to put." Eliza sighed. Switchblade took the paper and pen from her and wrote 'Birdy Geringer' then handed it back to her. Birdy smiled and looked at the word for a moment. "Birdy Geringer.." she sang. "I love it!" Birdy handed the board to Switchblade who scribbled out his name and dropped it back onto the counter. Anna followed the group and wrote 'Squeakers Taylor' down on the paper. "D-d-done?" The old man studded. The group nodded. He directed them to the stairs and told them, "Girls go in the right door, boys on the left. Just take an open bed!"

Echo was so excited to finally be here she attempted to jump half way up the stairs, but only succeeded in tripping and receiving a catch and a glare from Switchblade. She shrugged in apology to him and then continued to zip up the rest of the stairs as fast as her tiny feet would let her. Squeakers followed right on her tail even more ready to start something new, she even let out of squeak of joy almost every single step.
The door flung open to the empty room Echo let out a yelp of glee and then joined Squeakers in a dance. They swung each other around, sang the most glorious tune that they could think of and jumped on everything, until Birdy quickly hushed them and made them sit down on the floor in silence.
"Guys! it's almost two in the morning, they are people sleeping here!! show some respect!" Birdy hissed at them, she was always raised to be respectful, she couldn't help it! Echo and Squeakers merely nodded there heads and fidgeted in their place on the floor. The 3 girls that had brought something to un-pack began to do so, while Echo explored their room.
They were just about to get into bed when the door creaked open. A tall-ish boy with light brown hair came into the room rubbing one of his eyes.
"What's all da racket?!" He exclaimed, opening to his eyes to something he had never expected to see in the lodging house... girls.
"What the!" He practically yelled while jumping back. Squeakers ran from the bed that she had chosen to go and greet the boy.
"HIYA!! I'm Squeakers! You can call me Squeaks though... whatever!! HI!" She yelped at him, jittery with excitement.
"I'm ahhh...aaa..." He tried to say, still confused, he looked behind him then looked back, and scratched his head.
"uhh, Jack. Cowboy if you like... what?" Jack just couldn't fathom what was going on.
"So, Jack? Did you find out what was making that...goils..." Another boy with curly brown hair said while walking into the room. His eyes widened and he laughed nervously, suddenly he seemed to realize something, he brushed his some of his hair to the side, leaned on the door way, and smirked.
"Mush." He said while raising his eyebrows and holding out a dirty hand. Snicker looked at it in disgust, then waved it away and looked at the two boys with her head cocked.
"Is there a closet here?!" Snicker asked them. They just looked at her like she was from another planet, closet? She threw her hands up in the air then rolled her eyes and walked away. Jack continued to stare at them a bit then asked "Did Kloppman say you could be here?"
"Well of course! it'd be rude if he hadn't." Birdy said waving a knowledgeable hand into the air next to her. Jack stared a bit longer, then finally took in the fact that they had some new residents at the lodging house. He jogged across the hall and yelled into the other room. About 10 minutes later about 30 boys streamed into the room, stunned. There were questions asked, but soon all of the newsies had taken it in and Jack began to introduce everyone.
Once everyone knew names they all started to talk a bit, they all knew that they would have to get up early the next morning, but the boys quite liked tonight, and they decided to stay awhile. All the girls were exceptionally pretty so most of the guys didn't think twice about trying something. Switchblade laid a protective hand on Echo's shoulder, Squeakers giggled, Birdy talked to all of them sweetly but veered away from any contact what so ever, and Snicker thought that she would've taken any of them over some rich fool that her parents had chosen for her.
"EY!! GO TO SLEEP!! I DON'T NEED MORE TROUBLE GETTIN' YOU KIDS UP TOMARRAH!" Kloppman yelled at them from the doorway. The boys quickly filed back into their own room mumbling illegible comments about the girls.
"d-d-do you girls ne-ne-need anything?" Kloppman asked the four girls.
"No thank you. Good night sir!" Birdy said with a grin, the others gave their own variations on her response. They waited until Kloppman closed the door, then nearly passed out before they could even get to their beds.

Birdy had never heard such a scary thing in her life; she knew this when the strangled scream of Kloppmann rang loudly across the room. "AAAAAAAH!" she wailed in fright. She sat up in bed so fast she rammed her head on the top bunk, this made her moan loudly again. "Gawd, Birdy! What's ya problem?!" Echo yelled. "Well, didn't you hear it? It was terrible!" she moaned. "That was Kloppmann waking the boys up," Echo explained with annoyance. "Oh," Birdy whispered. She crawled out of the bed and walked to the sink. Her stomach dropped when she remembered that she didn't have all the cleaning products that she used to have. The washbasin with rosewater in it, the scented soaps, and the powder she used for her face. Here, there was a chipped basin of water with a mutated lump of soap beside it, along with a stained towel. "It'll have to do," she whispered to herself.

Snicker rolled out of bed and onto the floor reaching around under the bed for her trunk. She got a grip on it and tugged. Once she pulled it out she sat up and began rummaging through it for something to wear. "Echo, you know my wardrobe well, what dress should I wear today?" Snicker asked examining a few dresses closely. "Eh Snick, ya can't wear a dress." Echo said drowsily rubbing the sleep off her eyes. Snicker looked at her friend in shock. No dresses? "B-b-b-but!" She stuttered. "You'se a Newsie now, Snick. You'se bettah dress da part. Heah, barrow dis!" Echo said tossing a chocolate brown pair of knickers and a white blouse at the little girl on the floor. "Why?!" Snicker exclaimed in terror. "Well, you'se also gotta hide from ya folks, right?" Echo said walking towards her concerned friend. "Which begs da question, what are we gonna do with all this hair? It defines you too well. People will recognize ya too quick." Snicker considered this stroking her long, think brown hair. She couldn't deny her, she was right. "Can we cut it later?" Snicker whimpered. "Sure, but soon." Echo got up and made her way to the washrooms to start a bath, leaving Snicker on the floor to dress herself. -- "These pants are so..." Birdy searched for the word, " uncomfortable." "There definitely something different. But it's like French cheese, you've gotta get used to it, you know?" Snicker stated pulling on her knickers. The three girls looked at her in confusion. "French cheese?" Echo mumbled with the raise of an eyebrow. "What?! It's just a metaphor!" Snicker exclaimed shrugging her shoulders. "Come on, come on ladies!" Squeakers squealed grabbing Echo by the collar and joyfully skipping out the door. Down the stairs and into the lobby where the girls met up with all the boys. An awkward silence fell over the two groups as they refused to merge and huddled in their separate groups. Kloppman walked between the two groups not noticing until he was half through the row. "Eh, what are ya doin?! Get outta heah! Go! Go you'se stupid kids!" He yelled with much power and using strange hand gestures. "Ey, I tell ya. Boys and goils dese days." he mumbled under his breath. Snicker stared at Kloppman in fear as Echo took a breath and walked to the huddle of boys in the other side of the room. "Mornin, Switch." Echo greeted her pal merrily with a grin. "Hey." He said expressionless. "Soooo... Fellas..." Echo struggled to find a conversation starter. The girls glanced around the group, looking to see if one of the boys would pipe up. Snicker gasped as her eyes widened. She'd spotted a familiar face. "ANTHONY!" She squealed rushing to the boy and throwing her short arms around him. "Anthony?" Birdy asked with a this-is-the-weirdest-day-of-my-life face. "Naw, naw Snick. You'se confused. Dats Racetrack." Jack said with a sly I-know-everything grin. Snicker laughed. "Racetrack?" she giggled looking at the nervous boy. "Hiya Angie..." he mumbled. Everyone looked at the two of them in confusion. "Oh sorry I did not explain, you see 'Racetrack' is my-" He cut her off. "Nothing!" He exclaimed, "I'm her nothing! I don't know her I sweah!" "Anthony. Wha- when did you pick up an accent?" "Since I came, okay? Just leave me alone." he grumbled pushing her out of hsi way and walking out the door. "Anthony wait! I'm sorry!" She called after him running out the door. A spell of silence. Echo broke it. "Lets go buy some papes!" She exclaimed leading the group out the door. "Better be careful Jack, she might atchully REPLACE ya!" Mush teased with a goofy laugh, playfully punching his friend in the gut. Jack groaned and rubbed his new wound. "A-huh."

Echo led the group enthusiastically. She honestly couldn't feel happier. She was free from that awful orphanage, free to do whatever she wanted, and was payed for it! Echo was so caught up in skipping along merrily, that she forgot where she was headed. "Ah, Echo?" Jack said questioningly. She stopped and turned toward him. "Yeah?" "The distribution centa is dat way," he said with a pointed finger. "Oh, yeah," Echo mumbled, a slight red blush tinting her cheeks. _____
"What IS that thing?" Snicker whispered to Echo nervously. She had just seen Weasel in the window, not quite sure who or what he was. Mush had just overheard her saying this and busted into laughter. "She doesn't know if Weasel's even human!" he shouted. The other boys erupted into laughs. Racetrack, always ready for a wisecrack, chimed in. "Dat's cause he's not--he's a weasel!" he called. Even louder guffawing exploded from the boys. The newly added girls and boy just looked around in confusion, not understanding the joke. Crutchy noticed their confusion and decided to explain. "Ya see, guys, his name's Mr. Wiesel, but he's so mean and fat, we likes to call him Weasel!" Echo and Squeakers couldn't help but chuckle, but Birdy and Snicker were still looking dumbstruck.

"You can go foist, Echo." Jack said allowing room for Echo to make her way up to the window. "Uhh..." She wasn't sure what to say. "100 papes. Then say somethin snappy." Jack whispered. Echo placed a hand on her hip and smirked. "Hundred papes Weasey." she sassed flipping a coin onto the counter top. "Eh, wait a minute. Youse a girl!" Weasel excalimed holding back Echo's papers. He looked around the crowd of newsies. He panicked: "Dares four of ya?! Four goils?! Where da heck did youse come from?! How can goils be newsies?! Why you dressed like a boy?! Whats goin on heah?!" Echo snatched her papers from Weasel's grasp. "You ask too many questions, greasy old man!" she mumbled under her breath. "You next, Snick." Jack said pushing the quivering girl forward. "Hu-hu-huuu." Snicker gulped. "C'mon kid, how many papes?!" Weasel demanded. "Huuuu-hu- FORTY PAPES!!!" She screamed as she ran off to hide behind a cart. "..." "Shes new at the whole talking to strange old men thing." Birdy stated. "Eh... Well, your turn Birdy." Jack said. "A hundred newspapers please, Mr. Weasel." Birdy said properly setting two quarters down onto the counter. Weasel grinned. "I like dis one." He said with a chuckle. Echo gagged as she began to look through the days headlines.

Let's see... Echo thought to herself
" Trash can fire... Baby born with... 2 fingers? Cat stuck in tree..." She mumbled to herself.
"WHAT IS THIS CRAP!" Echo yelled when she finshed reading everything. The three other girls nodded in agreement and turned to Jack. Jack sat down next to Echo and began to explain.
"See, sometimes news ain't so great, so you gots to...improve the truth a tad." Jack told her with a smirk. Echo seemed confused for a moment but then a similar grin soon crossed her face.
"I get it... so instead of dis garbage I could say sometin' like..." She though a moment.
"2 HEADED BABY CAUGHT IN BURNING TREE!!" Echo shouted like she was hawking a headline out on the street. Jack laughed and patted her on the back.
"Dat's good, real good! hey, youse even started to pick up on the accent already too..." He laughed a little again then got back in line to get his own papers.

"How can a baby get stuck in a tree?!" Birdy excalimed sounding slightly offended. "Use your imagination Elizab- er I mean Birdy." Snicker said eyeing her papers. "Drunk man in Missouri chases locals out of town and out of state..." "Poifect, now shout it for everyone to heah!" Jack encouraged her. He was coaching them on how to sell papers. "Drunk man in Missouri chases locals out of town and state." She said a bit louder. "Snicker, we all know how loud you can scream!" Echo excalimed, "Shout!" "Drunk man in Missouri-" She hadn't changed her pitch and Switchblade had a quick idea. He pinched her in the arm as she continued, " CHASES LOCALS OUT OF TOWN AND OUT OF STATE!!!" she shrieked rubbing her throbbing arm. A man with a handle bar mustache bought one fo her papers and a women with a restless child pulling on her skirt bought one, as well. Jack grinned and patted Snicker on her back. "Good job, kid."

((I could guess, wow... I never thought Snicker would EVER get used to Switchblade, you've really turned over a new leaf!))
"Soo we just stand here all day and sell...newspapers?" Birdy asked, slightly confused with the subject.
"Well not exactly... youse got tah move around, and if ya sell fast enough you can even take a break befoah de evenin' edition!" Jack told her jokingly. Birdy stood there puzzled for a moment but then realized the humor and decided to pull a little herself. She began to walk around in a circle shouting out headlines and resting every 30 seconds or so.
"Like that?" She asked with a goofy grin. The rest of the group laughed and patted her on the back.
---------------------- ((this really isn't a scene change, more of a change of topic...))
"So, since youse goils... and you..." Jack said stopping for a moment to scale his eyes up Switchblade.
"...are new to the newsie buisness I'll set each of ya off wid some a de otha's, alright?" Jack told them putting one of his feet up on a crate and leaning forward. They nodded in agreement. Jack called some of the other newsies over and began assigning them to each of the girls.
"let's see... ahh Specs and Dutchy you go wid Snicka'" He told them, pointing to the small girl. Specs walked over to her, looked down, tipped his hat a bit, adjusted his glasses, and grinned. Dutchy threw a glee filled arm around her, while Snicker just stood there wringing her hands...
"now... Squeaks youse is gonna get Skittery and... boots." Squeakers giggled a little bit at Boots and then stared in awe at Skittery, she could barely help herself from running her hand through his hair when he greeted her with a tip of his hat and a "Hey"
"Kid Blink and Snoddy you can acompany Boids here." Snoddy merely tipped his hat and smiled while Blink...
"Good mornin' miss" He said with a smile. He gently took her hand and laid a kiss on it, Birdy couldn't help but blush.
"Well ain't you da charma'!" Jack said while slapping Blink over the head.
"WHAT!! I was just bein' polite..." Kid Blink yelled, then took his place at Birdy's side.
"yeah yeah, shoie youse were, ok now back to... Echo! uhhh, me and Pie Eata' will go wid ya" Jack said, ushering pie Eater over. Switchblade raised his eyebrows then quickly pulled Echo to his side.
"Sheesh, he don't talk much do he? If ya wanted to stay wid her ya coulda just said so... but I think because of your little problem wid words, i'll put ya with me boy Mush."Jack smirked at this. Switchblade only glared, and Echo only giggled, she liked it when he got like this, most of the time it was kinda cute.
"don't worry, don't worry, you'll see her lata'!" Jack said reassuringly, yanking Echo under his own "protective" arm. Switchblade nodded his head once in forced agreement, but he went up to Echo, picked her up so she was at eye level with him and whispered something in her ear.
"ewww!! I got it though, now can you set me down?" Echo said putting her hands on her hips. He gently set her down and she skipped back to Jack.
